RIVALRY BETWEEN JUVENTUS AND NAPOLI EXTENDS TO COPPA ITALIA 2012 FINAL

May 20, 2012 Leave a comment

Juventus and Napoli are set to face one another in this year’s Coppa Italia Final. The match will light the fire of northern and southern Italy’s rivalry once again, as the north’s Juventus hosts the Coppa Italia final with visiting Napoli from the south aiming to win against Italy’s strongest football club.

Juventus is a powerful contender for this match, beating Milan with an aggregate score of 4-3 in the semi-finals to reach the finals. It also became the third team in the history of the Serie A to go on undefeated the whole season when it won this year’s title. It is also Italy’s most successful football club, gaining the most titles and supporters throughout its history.

Napoli, on the other hand, will not take the pressure lightly. The Azzurri is capable of competing against the mighty Old Lady. Napoli did not lose to Juventus in 4 matches before its recent defeat versus the Turin-based club in this year’s Serie A. The Naples-based club enjoyed 3-1 and 3-0 wins and maintained two draws against Juventus in the Serie A matches of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, respectively.

Can Juventus win the double this season or will Napoli win for the first time since 1987?

Dunne boost for Villa

Aston Villa central defender Richard Dunne returned to training on Monday after two months out of action with a broken collarbone.

Villa manager Alex McLeish is confident Dunne will be available for the final two games of the campaign against Tottenham and Norwich. It is also a boost for Ireland ahead of their Euro 2012 campaign. Dunne has been sidelined since suffering the setback against Manchester City in February.

McLeish said: “It’s good news regarding Richard. He has rejoined the group for training today (Monday). If he doesn’t make the game at West Brom this weekend, he should be ready for the Tottenham match.” McLeish expects Dunne to be available for instant first-team action rather than having to test out his fitness via the reserves.

He said: “With a guy like Dunnie, and with what the modern-day physical trainers and medical people do, the aim is to try and get the player up to speed so he can go straight back into the side. There should be plenty of preparation work for Dunnie so he can step straight back in.”

Wolves down as City win

April 23, 2012 Leave a comment

Manchester City closed the gap to leaders Manchester United and confirmed Wolverhampton Wanderers’ relegation from the Barclays Premier League with a 2-0 win at Molineux.

article-2069518-0F09B29200000578-187_634x383.jpg (634×383)

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri saw City reduce the gap at the top of the table to three points, with Wolves heading down to the Championship.

City looked threatening from the off, with Aguero shooting narrowly wide from a tight angle, but Wolves were causing problems for the visitors at the other end, as David Davis had a effort saved by Joe Hart.

However, after City had gone close ahead through both Nasri and Aguero, the Argentine striker broke the deadlock. Gael Clichy skillfully got the better of Michael Kightly before playing a superb pass into the heart of the Wolves defence for Aguero to slot a finish home, despite being off balance.

City dominated the closing stages of the first half, but failed to add to their advantage.

Wolves found their feet early in the second period, with Joe Hart at full stretch to prevent Stephen Fletcher’s header from levelling matters, but City steadied the ship and added the second goal with 16 minutes of normal time remaining.

Carlos Tevez took a quick free-kick and when the ball was returned to the front-man, he found Nasri, who applied a neat finish to more or less confirm Wolves’ relegation.

Aguero blew a fine chance to add a third and Dorus de Vries did superbly to keep out a header from his own player, Richard Stearman, but it mattered little as City closed the gap to their rivals at the top of the pile.
